Guide to unemployment benefits for recent graduates

Here is an overview of the important steps you should follow if you want to receive unemployment benefits after completing your education:

  1. Change your status to “recent graduate”: Submit the "Completion of Education" form via Tast Selv within 14 days after your final exam to change your status from student to recent graduate.
  2. Register as unemployed on jobnet.dk: Make sure to register as unemployed on jobnet.dk the day after your final exam. This step is essential for receiving benefits. If you have not been a member of an unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse) throughout your studies, be aware that a one-month waiting period applies.
  3. Register as unemployed in Tast Selv: Do this after receiving the confirmation email about your status change to "recent graduate" in order to apply for unemployment benefits. The amount you receive depends, among other things, on whether you have children.
  4. Create your CV on jobnet.dk: This allows you to find relevant job offers. Also, sign up for a meeting for recent graduates via Tast Selv with A&Til, where you'll learn about the rules for unemployment benefits and be introduced to "Min Plan" (My Plan).

Keep your student job while receiving unemployment benefits

You can keep your student job and receive supplementary unemployment benefits for up to 30 weeks (not required to be consecutive). You must be able to resign from your position at short notice. Once you’ve been approved, you must register your working hours each month on an unemployment benefits card so we can deduct them from your benefit payments.

Resign from your student job in time

If you choose to quit your student job when finishing your studies, it's important to leave the position no later than the day before your final exam. This ensures that you’re entitled to receive unemployment benefits from the day after your last exam, provided you’ve been a member of the unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse) for at least one year.

If, on the other hand, you resign from your student job after you’ve started receiving unemployment benefits, you will face a three-week quarantine period without benefits. That’s why it’s important to resign in good time.

If you forget to resign from your student job before starting your benefit period, you may apply for supplementary benefits instead. However, be aware that if you later choose to resign voluntarily, this will result in a quarantine period. If your employer terminates your employment, you will avoid quarantine.
